MaQTech is bringing together the Canadian quantum community of academic and industrial researchers to train the next generation of quantum specialists. This initiative is supported by NSERC as a Collaborative Research and Training Experience project.
Our mission is to train the future quantum workforce to bridge the chasm between academic research and industrial needs by implementing a unique program—with emphasis on materials science and engineering— dedicated to preparing cohorts of young scientists and engineers who will facilitate technology transfer to effectively create new market opportunities for the emerging Canadian quantum industry.
Innovations in quantum technologies relies on the cross-pollination among many different areas. Our team’s expertise and access to state-of-the-art facilities, complemented by activities and courses continuously tailored in MaQTech, provide trainees with in-depth knowledge in areas such as semiconductors, superconductors, 2D, topological materials, and many more.
Lab to Facility Bridge
To accelerate the employment readiness of the future quantum workforce trained in MaQTech, trainees are immersed in innovation-driven working environments that foster knowledge transfer and technological impact, and introduce trainees to research environments where commercialization and socio-economic impact are a priority.
Conquering Commercialization
Through institutional support and external collaborators, trainees receive the necessary training to address commercialization challenged in quantum materials. Trainees gain technical skills in standardization, metrology, intellectual property, and technology transfer, as well as training in effective knowledge mobilization and communication to the public.
MaQTech aims to equip the future quantum workforce with skills that bridge the chasm between academic research and industrial needs. MaQTech provides trainees with program activities, trainee mobility, professional skills and mentoring to ensure trainees are ready to enter the quantum workforce.
Access to state-of-the-art facilities, complemented by activities and courses continuously tailored in MaQTech, provide trainees with the necessary skills to drive Canadian quantum innovation. To accelerate the employment readiness of MaQTech trainees, we established partnerships with industry and national laboratories to deliver immersive, experiential learning opportunities, complemented by professional development, including communication, leadership and organizational skills, entrepreneurship as well as career preparation and teamwork.
MaQTech empowers students to pursue their own career pathway in a field that is in high demand of talent in Canada’s rapidly developing quantum ecosystem including industry, government, NGOs, and academia.
Research conducted by MaQTech trainees addresses grand challenges in quantum materials and have a transformative impact on the technological challenges of tomorrow. Supported by a team with a diversity of complementary experiences, MaQTech trainees advance knowledge in quantum science and gain hands-on-skills that are indispensable in the emerging quantum industry—from advanced synthesis and characterization to broader skills like electronic and optical measurements and cryogenics.
Our diverse team has 11 researchers from six Canadian institutions spanning broad expertise from theory, machine learning and artificial intelligence, materials synthesis (micron-size to wafer-scale), development of light-matter quantum interfaces, device fabrication, design of electronic circuits, and experimental characterization including local scanning probes, optical spectroscopies, and quantum transport from room to cryogenic temperatures.
